Local couple chooses to educate their seven children at home
It's 8 a.m. at the Stuart household in Owosso and six of the seven children in the family are lining up in the living room to greet their father.
Almost like troops getting in formation to morning reveille, the Stuart children greet their father, Guy Stuart III, with a warm good morning. He responds with a series of questions about the status of their chores, if they've brushed their teeth or if they're ready for the day ahead.

Parents tout ‘unschooling’ as natural way for children to learn
Like many other 7-year-old boys, Richie Fox likes cartoons, video games and Legos. The Mesa boy has dissected frogs and made a baking soda volcano.
But unlike most kids his age, Richie has never taken a test and doesn’t go to school. He is “unschooled” by his mom, Cindy Fox. Unschooling is a segment of the homeschooling population that doesn’t use a set curriculum, and instruction is driven by student interest. Parents of unschooled children describe the approach as the natural way to learn.

From home school to top of his WHS class
Weed High School senior Caleb Moore, home-schooled from first through eighth grade, “is looking like a valedictorian this year,” said principal Mike Matheson in his introduction last week to the Weed Rotary Club.
“He absolutely stands out academically,” Matheson said of Moore. “He is always well prepared and participates in his classes, a role model for others.”
Moore was honored on Thursday as the WHS student of the month for November.
